On November 18th – 19th, DEM organized a 2-day event in Makedonska Kamenica: a one-day public discussion about the activities of the Sasa lead and zinc mine that have led to industrial discharge being released into Lake Kalimanci, and a field trip to the mine.

The field trip helped us to identify areas in the municipality of Makedonska Kamenica which need urgent attention like Kalimanci Lake and its tributaries in order to reduce damaging effects of mining.

On the second day we held a public debate for 25 stakeholders. This public debate was facilitated by 2 experts in mining and environment and focussed on providing inputs for improving the quality of mine environment in order to continue the mining operation in an eco-friendly manner.

The conclusions of the dealt with how to increase DEM’s efforts and raise lobbying capacities of the local member organization “Zdravec 2002”, in particular:

– how to solve the problem with the mining waste dump created in the vicinity of the Kamenica river for which we drafted a lobbying plan and requested actions

– how to facilitate the knowledge transfer and provide a status of environmental management activity as perceived and implemented by mining companies from Sasa mines and local NGOs, involving environmental professionals.
