Solarna Pecka: Bringing solar energy closer to everyone

The Bosnian SEENET member organization Center for Environment (CZZS), together with its’ close partner “Greenways – organization for the support of sustainable development” has been running since this spring the “Solarna Pecka” initiative to bring solar prosuming to the village of Pecka, affected by energy deprivation and the unsustainable exploitation of its’ natural resources, especially the Sana river, close to its springs, by the recently built sHPP Medna.

Solarna Pecka is an initiative aiming to bring a clean and sustainable energy source, solar energy, to the village of Pecka (in the Mrkonjic Grad municipality, Bosnia & Herzegovina), through a community energy citizen’s direct engagement and financing model.

As this very biodiverse area is affected, on the one hand, by the unsustainable exploitation of their natural resources (forests, soil, and recently, the springs of its pristine river Sana (through the Austrian owned small hydro power plant “Medna”) and on the other, by energy deprivation (energy poverty and low quality supply), the initiative provides a clean energy alternative which allows sustainable development of the Pecka village in a context of protection of its natural environment.

The initiative's first step is focused on achieving a first solar prosuming (self-production/self-consumption) experience possible in Pecka, as part of the center for rural sustainable tourism “Visitor Centar Pecka”, through the installment of solar thermal collectors and photovoltaic (PV) panels on the Visitor Center’s roof, to produce warmth and electricity, but also to promote and demonstrate solar prosuming, gather data and on-site know-how, explore Pecka’s potentials for further solar prosuming developments in the village and serve, all in all, as a good practice example for the promotion of community sustainable energy alternatives against the dominant coal-thermal and hydro-power energy production sources.

This initiative is promoted by the SEENET member “Center for Environment (CZZS)” together with the Bosnian NGO “Greenways – organization for the support of sustainable development” - which manages Visitor Center Pecka- and the support of “Green energy cooperative (ZEZ)” from Croatia.

You can watch the Solarna Pecka initiative presentation video on the following link.

The initiative’s first online crowdfunding campaign, aiming to engage citizens actively and directly in bringing to life this prosuming pilot project in Visitor Center Pecka, was launched and succesfully finished in June 2019. This campaign has been followed by a successful fundraising that will allow that solar PV panels and collectors are installed on Visitor Center Pecka’s roof.

In order to bring both the initiative and solar energy closer to Pecka’s visitors, “Greenways” is planning to install a solar demonstrative self-standing installation (solar tree) to be used to recharge mobile phone batteries, with the educational purpose of making solar prosuming visible, first-hand accessible and understandable to public of all ages. Greenways, as close partner of the SEENET member organization Center for Environment (CZZS) is asking SEENET network to support finantially the conception, production and installment of this “Solar Tree” in Visitor Center Pecka.
