Regional NGO training “Young activists for sustainable future”
Regional NGO training “Young activists for sustainable future” was held from 11th – 22nd July 2001 in the Solar Academy at Island of Šolta, near Split, in Croatia.
47 future leaders and activists coming from different environmentally focused organisations, had an opportunity to listen lectures that covered topics from sustainable energy, transport, development, and climate changes to eco activism and permaculture. Second part of the training was practical workshops on how to self make solar collector for water heating and how to make a biodiesel from used eatable oil.
The peak of the training was the installation of educational solar system and a small windmill for generating electricity held on 15th July. As part of this happening we held a forum with Jasenka Nećak, official from the Ministry of the Environment, who pointed out the importance of acting NGOs in education and strengthening of public awareness in environmental issues. Toni Vidan from Zelena akcija has presented Solar Academy project and the intention of Zelena akcija to start a solar plant on this location in cooperation with the local community. After the forum, representatives of the Fractal Company and University of Split Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture have presented an installation of educational solar system. This system will allow more effective education on renewable energy sources to participants of all educational programmes in Solar Academy and cover the needs for electricity of the object itself. For the system to have a better educational function, system components are placed inside the drawing of the academic painter Gordana Bakić.
