Positive news from 39th Bern Convention regarding Kresna Gorge case

On Friday 6 December, the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention decided to strengthen the monitoring of the Struma highway construction through the Kresna Gorge by sending an expert mission to the project. The decision followed a European Commission report identifying violations of the European environmental legislation in the EIA procedure and in the application form for EU financing for the project.

SEENET member Balkani Wildlife Society and Save Kresna Gorge Coalition on this year's 39th Standing Committee of the Bern Convention came with the goal of opening a case file on the construction of Struma motorway in Kresna Gorge.

They initiated a support letter that was signed by 12 SEENET organizations and  sent to the Bern Convention secretariat and the 39th Standing Committee delegates.

From 3-6 December the 39th Standing Committee debated all the aspects of this case and although the case file is still not opened, it is held as “potential file”, changes have been made in the direction of supporting an alternative route for the motorway

We congratulate our Bulgarian colleagues on the positive outcome and hope they achieve their longtime goal of protecting nature and biodiversity of Kresna Gorge. #SaveKresna!
