Fridays for Future Albania: Albanian SEENET NGOs EDEN Qendra and IEP fostering the youth movement against climate change

Activists and volunteers from SEENET NGOs EDEN Environmental Center/Qendra EDEN and Institute for Environmental Policy – IEP are since September’s Global Climate strikes fostering a youth movement against climate change in Albania, articulated as the “Fridays for Future” Albanian group, bringing together youngsters from Tirana and other major cities in the country aiming to raise awareness on the current climate crisis and call on citizens to get active both at individual level, changing to more sustainable behaviors, and collectively, reminding Albanian government to keep the promises made on Paris agreement

As a result of Tirana’s 1st Climate march success and on the verge of Tirana’s 2nd Climate march, several members and volunteers of the Albanian SEENET organizations EDEN Environmental Center/Qendra EDEN and Institute for Environmental Policy – IEP together with local activists, decided to form the Albanian Fridays For Future group to bring together youngsters and citizens from all the country to take individual and collective action in relation with the current climate crisis.

The 2nd Climate march in Tirana, celebrated on 4th October and supported by a “Support for SEENET network and members” subgrant through the Albanian SEENET member Organic Agriculture Association (OAA) and directly by several SEENET members managed to attract new people, specially youngsters, as well as attention from media, what motivated the group to keep on working on climate marches, and, on parallel, on communication to spread the word on the climate crisis and Fridays For Future movement mostly on social media and also directly in high schools and the university.

After a Third climate march in Tirana on 1st november, Fridays For Future Albania next step was to organize a forum with youth and for youth in order to collect ideas on the continuity of the marches and the movement: A seminar was held on 22nd of November with the title “Te rinjte dhe ndryshimet klimatike ne shqiperi” (Youth and climate change in Albania) aiming to inform, share thoughts and ideas on the topic of Climate Change but overall to create strong connections between the different groups of youngsters interested by the issue. The seminar was attended by several very active pupils, students and teachers - some of them coming even from different cities of Albania - and it resulted very fruitful and inspiring, with participants expressing their interest to contribute on the campaign through small actions in their cities. You can what several photos of the seminar in the following gallery.

It was also agreed to organize an action for 29th of November, date for the next “Global strike 4 future”, but also the National Independence Day of Albania, a celebration which gathers a lot of people in Tirana’s main square, and an opportunity to give some strong messages connecting climate change and the situation in Albania. Besides, it was planned to create info points engaging EDEN volunteers to spread information on the topic.

Fridays For Future Albania, through the SEENET member organization EDEN Qendra, asked for a “Support SEENET network and members” subgrant to support this action and following activities, as well as for solidarity support from SEENET members with the group.

Due to the terrible earthquake that stroke Albania on 26th November and the humanitarian emergency afterwards, the group decided to postpone the action in solidarity with the affected families. The plan is now to keep organizing climate marches in December as well as to have a second seminar to relate the earthquakes with the climate crisis. EDEN Environmental Center, together with  Institute for Environmental Policy – IEP, will use the mentioned subgrant to engage and support directly Fridays For Future Albania in the organization the mentioned activities in December, asking also the rest of SEENET network organizations to support them through solidarity and support acts.

SEENET network also what to express in this lines its solidarity with the victims and affected Albanian population by this catastrophe.
