Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia: The Antidote

One of the relevant activities related to biodiversity loss that Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia (BPSSS) implements in the region aims to raise awareness and deal with the issue of wildlife poisoning through workshops, presentations and discussions with local communities.

The Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia (BPSSS) - SEENET member from Novi Sad, part of Bird Life International-  actively monitors and advocates for solving the problem of wildlife poisoning in Serbia. BPSSS has identified more than 2000 cases of deliberate animal poisoning from 2000 to 2019. This negative practice, which is deeply rooted in the tradition of the local population, does enormous damage to the populations of strictly protected bird species such as White-tailed eagle, Imperial eagle, Griffon vulture and all other scavenger species.

To deal with the really widespread issue of wildlife poisoning, BPSSS is organizing the action "The Antidote!" in  the city of Niš and Leskovac. The goal of this action is to familiarize the citizens of Niš and Leskovac with the problem of wildlife poisoning, and its’ potential risks for public health. These two cities were chosen because in the region of southern and eastern Serbia the scale of the problem is bigger than in the other parts of the country.

The action aims to raise awareness among both citizens and local decision-makers. In that sense, a workshop with stakeholders is organized as part of the action. Besides, a screening of the serbian documentary film "The Antidote" (Protivotrov, 2019, Dragan Gmizić, Smartbird Films, Greenfield) will be held, after which a public discussion with the title “Knowledge against poisoning” on the issue of wildlife poisoning will be organized.

The Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia (BPSSS) is asking SEENET network for support for this action, both to finance it through a “Support to SEENET members” subgrant, and to give visibility and raise awareness on this issue sharing the mentioned film in SEENET members’ social media.
