Toni Vidan, a representative of environmental NGOs from Croatia to the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), at the plenary session of this EU advisory body held yesterday, was elected president of the new working group on “Producers – consumers of energy and producer-consumer energy cooperatives: Opportunities and challenges in the EU “.

The aim of the working group is to prepare a document by July, with recommendations to the responsible EU bodies that would contribute to a better legal position of a number of energy consumers (households, crafts ..) and their associations, wishing to turn from passive consumers into energy producers using local renewable sources, primarily solar, wind or biomass.

The EESC is all the more actively engaged in certain aspects of the transformation of the EU energy sector which is in progress, particularly in order to promote the so-called “communal energy”, which means not only decentralized energy projects based on the use of local renewable energy sources, but also the important element of (co-)ownership of these projects by local people or local authorities. Decentralization and transformation of current energy consumers into so called “prosumers” (producers-consumers) of energy plays an especially important role in the transformation of the energy sector.

Toni Vidan, a longtime head of the energy program of Zelena akcija/Friends of the Earth Croatia, represents more than 40 environmental associations from the national network Green Forum at EESC and is also vice president of the expert group on transport, energy, infrastructure and information society, the so-called “TEN” section. It is one of six thematic permanent working groups in which 350 EESC members from all Member States prepare common positions on the new European legislative proposals and policies. In accordance with priority areas of his work – promotion of sustainable energy, in particular in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and the promotion of regional cooperation in the protection of the Adriatic Sea – Vidan got involved in the Working Group on Sustainable Development and the Eastern Partnership.
